Description: More than 3,000 books/reports are free to read online, published by the National Academies Press (NAP). Most allow chapters to be skimmed and read page by page; usually a page can be printed for free as a page image (PDF). Some also include free PDF summaries or briefs. The basic search, the "Discovery Engine," searches the full text of their books/reports. The "Precision Search" allows searching within the book/report title or you may select all publications from a publication year, if listed. These publications are subject to copyright.
The NAP was created by the National Academies to publish the reports issued by the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering , the Institute of Medicine, and the National Research Council , all operating under a charter granted by the Congress of the United States. The NAP publishes more than 200 books a year on a wide range of topics in science, engineering, and health, capturing the most authoritative views on important issues in science and health policy. The institutions represented by the NAP are unique in that they attract the nation's leading experts in every field to serve on their award-winning panels and committees. This is a good place for definitive information on everything from space science to animal nutrition. A very small number of Transportation Research Board (TRB) books/reports are also included.
